TREATS is a modern metallurgical testing and development centre, functioning in Kolkata since January 1986. This centre has facilities for testing and inspection of metallurgical raw materials, semis and finished products. We also undertake investigation, failure analysis and quality system counselling for metallurgical / engineering industries.
We have the following major TESTING FACILITIES in METALS:
- Chemical analysis of Metals & Alloys equipped with:
- Desktop Spectro for chemical analysis by world renowned>“SpextroMAXx” of Germany for Cast iron, steel & alloys, copper and aluminum alloys, including Nitrogen in steels (ppm level). This machine has additional attachments, which can analyse sheets as low as 0.1mm thick and wires/rods as low as 0.8mm dia.
- Desktop Spectro for chemical analysis by world renowned “HITACHI” of Germany for Nickle and Nickle base alloys, Cast Iron, Steel & Alloys including Nitrogen in steels (ppm level), Copper and Copper alloys, Aluminum and Aluminum alloys, Tin and Tin base alloys and White Metal. This machine has additional attachments, which can analyze sheets and wire rods of low thickness/diameter.
- Mobile/Portable Spectro for chemical analysis of metals and alloys by world renowned German make OXFORD INSTRUMENTS (now HITACHI) for steel, aluminum, copper and zinc base alloys, if required at site also, without destructing the material. This machine can detect all elements, including Carbon, Sulfur, Phosphorus, Silicon and Nitrogen (nitrogen in duplex steel) with high level of accuracy as in any other desktop Spectro.
- Positive Material Identification (PMI) by world renowned NITON Make PMI tester, for grade identification and sorting out of material, without destroying the finished goods, at site, if required.
- Positive Material Identification (PMI) by world renowned Olympus Venta C Make PMI tester, for grade identification and sorting out of material, without destroying the finished goods, at site, if required. This instrument is programmed to analyze light elements like Silicon, Sulfur, Phosphorous and precious elements (subject to detection limits).
- Metallurgical Analysis Laboratory by conventional wet method of analysis of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, ores and minerals by conventional wet method analysis.
- Mechanical Testing Laboratory equipped with:
- Universal Testing Machine (60 tonnes max. capacity) with Servo Controlled Electronic Panel & Electronic Extensometer for various type of mechanical tests like Tensile Test, 0.5% EUL, 0.2% Offset, % RA, % El., Bend tests, Proof Load Test of Nuts and Bolts, Proof Load Test of shackles, etc., Flattening and Flaring Tests, Drift Test, Testing of TMT / Deformed Test Bars & Plates, Angles / Channels / Beams, etc. for both ferrous and non-ferrous material.
- Rockwell Hardness Tester (for normal and superficial hardness)
- Vickers Hardness Tester (from 1Kg load to 50 Kg load)
- MICRO Vickers Hardness Tester (from 10 grams to 1000 grams load)
- Cupping Test Machine for thinner sheets.
- Impact Testing Machines (both ASTM & BS/ISO Type) for carrying out Izod and Charpy Impact Tests from room temperature to upto minus 196 degrees Centigrade. ASTM Type Impact Machine is calibrated as per ASTM E23 and BS Type Impact Machine as per ISO 148, by both Direct and Indirect Method.
- Lateral Expansion on impact test specimen.
- Metallography Laboratory having Zeiss Inverted Light Microscope – METAVAL HD - with Metal Image Analyzer & high-resolution CCD camera with PSU for computer generated photomicrographs upto 1000x. We also have Metallurgical STEREOZOOM MICROSCOPE with camera and built-in software, especially designed for clear Macro Photographs and measurements of weld profile requirements as per BS/ASTM specifications.
- In-Situ Metallography for carrying out metallographic study On-Site &/or for bigger / finished components / material, which cannot be destroyed, with photomicrographs, if required.
- Non-destructive Testing Department having the following facilities:
- Three gamma radiography cameras having maximum capacity of 65Ci Ir-192 source.
- Two250KVa X-Ray machine for radiography of thinner plates / pipes / sections of steel / SS and Aluminum
- Three digital ultrasonic flaw detectors DS 322 with color TFT monitor and one analog UT flaw detector.
- Two ultrasonic digital thickness gauges
- Three magnetic particle flaw detectors (Yoke type)
- ASTM Reference Radiographs on Steel Fusion Welds, Steel Castings upto 2” thickness, and Aluminum & Magnesium Casting.
- ASNT Level III head in NDT and/ ISNT/ASNT Level II qualified operators in RT / UT / MPT / DP.
- PCN Level II in UT/RT/MPT/LPT/VT.
- FERITSCOPE to determine Ferrite No. in FN in Austenitic and Duplex Steels by world renowned manufacturer FISCHER (Germany). This unit is compact and easy to handle and can be carried easily ON SITE to execute the job.
- Facilities for Welding Procedure Qualification and Welder’s Performance Qualification tests as
per ASME Section IX/ IS/ BS/ EN/ DIN/ API/ AWS/ EIL/ IOCL/ MECON Specifications & QAP.
- A Special Facility for determining Intergranular Corrosion (IGC)
- a) Stainless Steels as per IS and ASTM A 262 specification (Practice A, B, C & E).
- b) Facilities for corrosion test of Duplex Steels as per ASTM A923 and G48.
- Facilities for determination of Oxygen in Copper by microscopic method.
- Facilities for SALT SPRAY test as per IS / ASTM specifications, which can be carried out uninterrupted for
upto 1500 hours or more.
NDT TRAINING SERVICES AS PER ASNT:
TREATS has an NDT TRAINING centre where training is imparted by experienced and knowledgeable ASNT / ISNT Level 3 personnel as per ASNT SNT- TC-1A 2020 for the Qualification & Certification of NDT personnel in the field of RADIOGRAPHY TESTING / ULTRASONIC TESTING / MAGNETIC PARTICLE TESTING / DYE PENETRANT TESTING / VISUAL TESTING.
Renewal of existing certificates is also done as per rules and requirements in these fields.
TREATS is Accredited by NABL as per ISO/IEC 17025 in the field of Chemical Analysis (by Wet Method, Spectro & PMI), Mechanical Testing (including Impact, Metallography and IGC of SS & Corrosion tests of Duplex Stainless Steels) & Non-Destructive Testing (X-Ray / Gamma Ray / Ultrasonic Flaw Detection & Thickness Gauging / MPT / DP) as per scope of accreditation. TREATS is perhaps the only Laboratory in the Eastern Region to have maintained this recognition since 1998 uninterrupted.
TREATS also has an NDT Site office at Adityapur, Jamshedpur to cater to the NDT requirements there with respect to Radiography, Ultrasonic flaw detection, Ultrasonic Thickness Gauging, MPT, DP, PMI, etc.
